The fact that life transitions, such as injury and retirement, can have a serious, negative personal, social, emotional and behavourial effect on an individual, is no longer a painful secret. For example, at L&M we understand the issues that potentially haunt the injured or retired athlete: the loss of identity, physical engagement, social rewards and daily routine; and the perceived lack of purpose, knowledge or skills required to adapt to a new 'normal' life or to return to pre-injury performance levels. Concerns that might equally apply to any transitioning individual.

Guided by the latest research, our Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychology Consultants have specific expertise in supporting sportspeople through injury and retirement; skills that are readily adaptable to other transitions and individuals as appropriate. For example:

Injury Support.  Assistance can be effective at any point of the injury process, from occurrence, throughout rehabilitation, to the return to full sport engagement or to a life beyond sport/with new restrictions.  Specific support might include:  

  • Providing emotional and constructive listening support.

  • Strengthening personal control over the injury and rehabilitation process.

  • Identifying, transferring and developing skills and techniques to enable effective coping with day-to-day emotional and physical demands.

  • Considering opportunities for personal growth.

Retirement Support.  Assistance can help both prepare for, and cope with, retirement. Specific support might include:

  • Promoting personal control over the retirement process and outcome.

  • Enabling a coming to terms with the outcomes of a career, be the career perceived as successful or otherwise.

  • Identifying the important personal beliefs that best guide appropriate decisions and enable the development of a strategy for the future.

  • Gaining a broader sense of personal identity.

  • Identifying, transfering and developing constructive life and coping skills.

  • Developing and optimising social support structures.
